As of Thursday [Sept. 14], 37 Florida counties had been designated for federal disaster assistance for uninsured and under-insured damage and losses resulting from Hurricane Irma. FREE HOTLINE WILL GIVE LEGAL ADVICE ON HURRICANE RECOVERY

A hotline for free legal advice on Hurricane Irma recovery went live Wednesday [Sept. 13], for anyone dealing with the storm, but especially for those who can’t afford an attorney. The Federal Emergency Management Agency set up the hotline along with the Young Lawyers Divisions of the Florida Bar and American Bar Association. The number is (866) 550-2929.

Here are a few ways South Florida lawyers can put their skills and knowledge to work over the coming weeks, helping people affected by Hurricane Irma. They include answering questions through the online legal clinic Florida Free Legal Answers and signing up to respond to FEMA hotline questions. The hotline at (866) 550-2929 went live Wednesday, and the Young Lawyers Divisions of the Florida Bar and the ABA are looking for volunteers.

HURRICANE IRMA: PALM BEACH COUNTY COURTS REOPEN AFTER CASE, JUDGE SELECTION DELAYS

Several sentencings in high-profile cases and the selection process to replace two circuit judges have all been postponed by Hurricane Irma, even as business resumed Wednesday [Sept. 13] at a Palm Beach County satellite courthouse. Nonjury cases will resume today [Sept. 14] at the main county courthouse in West Palm Beach and the branch courthouses in Delray Beach and Belle Glade when those courthouses reopen to the public. The 15th Circuit State Attorney’s and Public Defender’s offices have already reopened. Jury duty, however, is canceled for the remainder of this week and will resume on Monday.
